Is this real rattan or PE plastic?
It's 100% real rattan — a renewable plant fiber that grows naturally in Southeast Asia and southern China. Three quick ways to tell real from fake: real rattan has visible grain variation between strands, feels slightly warmer to the touch than plastic, and has a faint natural smell. PE "rattan" looks too uniform, feels cooler, and is odorless.
How big is it really? Will it fit my needs?
It measures 38 × 28 × 35 cm (15" × 11" × 13.8" with handle). For perspective: it fits a standard baguette flat, about 6-8 medium lemons, 4-5 rolled cloth napkins, or a folded throw blanket. Internal depth is ~22 cm (8.7"), so wine bottles or tall vases fit but stick up a few inches.
How much weight can the handles hold?
We recommend up to 5 kg (11 lb) for everyday use. The dual arched handles are woven directly into the basket body (not glued or stapled), and reinforced where they meet. Rattan is a natural fiber though, so we don't suggest using it as a moving box for heavy books.
Can I use it outdoors or for picnics?
For picnics, gardening, or covered porches — yes, perfect. For permanent outdoor exposure (rain, direct sun, freezing temperatures), we don't recommend it. Natural rattan absorbs moisture, which can lead to mildew over time. After a damp use, just air-dry it indoors before storing.
How do I clean a handwoven rattan basket?
For dust: a soft brush, dry cloth, or vacuum on the lowest setting. For sticky spots: a slightly damp cloth with a drop of mild dish soap, then air-dry completely. Never soak it. Never put it in the dishwasher or washing machine. If it gets dusty in deep weave gaps, a soft toothbrush works wonders.
How long will a real rattan basket last?
With basic care (keep out of long-term moisture and direct sun), a quality handwoven rattan basket like this one lasts 8-15 years. Many of our customers' grandmothers had baskets like this — and they're still in use. Real rattan ages gracefully, often deepening to a warmer caramel tone.
Is the rattan food-safe? Can I put bread directly in it?
Raw rattan is naturally non-toxic and food-safe. For direct food contact (like bread, fruit, or sandwiches), we recommend lining with a clean cotton or linen cloth — not for safety, but to make crumb cleanup easier and prevent oils from soaking into the natural fibers.
Why does shipping take 12-18 business days?
Each basket is handwoven to order in our partner workshop in southern China, hand-inspected, then shipped via tracked airmail. We're a small operation, not Amazon — but you're getting a real handmade piece, not something stamped out by a machine. Tracking is provided so you can follow it the whole way.
Is rattan sustainable?
Rattan is one of the most sustainable materials available for woven goods. It's a fast-growing renewable plant (more like a vine than a tree, regrowing in 5-7 years), it's fully biodegradable at end of life, and it requires very little processing — no plastic resins, no synthetic dyes.
I saw similar baskets on AliExpress for $20. Why is yours $79?
Honest answer: those are usually mass-produced, often with PE plastic woven over a thin metal frame, and frequently with stapled (not woven) handles that fail in 6 months. Our supplier pays artisan wages, uses real rattan, and we hand-inspect every piece before shipping. Our price sits between AliExpress ($15-30) and premium retailers like Anthropologie ($148-198) for comparable quality.
Will the color or pattern look exactly like the photos?
Very close — but each piece is handwoven, so expect slight natural variations in color (honey to warm caramel tones), weave tightness, or fiber thickness. We consider this part of what makes handmade goods worth owning. If you want machine-perfect uniformity, this may not be the basket for you.
Do you offer larger or smaller sizes?
This 38cm size is our most popular for kitchen and dining use. We also offer a smaller 33.5cm rattan storage basket and a tulip-shaped basket for kids. Browse the full Home & Living collection.
